One hundred years ago, western art was generally divided between High Art– which was considered as having lasting value, and Popular Art – which was seen as entertaining, enjoyable but ephemeral.

In the last century this distinction has all but disappeared. In music, serious and complex creations can be found in all genres and lesser creations also. As Kurt Weill said: “I have never acknowledged the difference between serious music and light music. There is only good music and bad music.”

This course will examine the way in which various genres of accompanied song have been seen throughout the history of western music. We will meet online for one hour from Monday to Thursday both weeks of the summer session (June 29-July2 and July 6-9th. 4;30 - 5:30pm). Topics discussed will venture from renaissance lute songs through the 19th century art songs and into cabaret, popular song and beyond.
